Solid boundaries established early in a child's life are extremely important to their wellbeing and development. Parents have been traditionally given a role of authority with their children and they do not do them any favors when they behave as their friend. When the roles become obscure usually the boundaries do as well. The value of understanding limits and boundaries is immeasurable as a child.

A child that has never been taught boundaries and the difference between an authority figure and a friend figure will carry that confusion into adulthood and most likely get themselves into trouble by doing something that they shouldn't do or just go too far with a prank or something that they think is funny when in fact it is something that they shouldn't be doing in the first place.

I recently had an experience in a restaurant where two 4 or 5 year old boys were getting bored and started playing in the restaurant. They went over to their mother and started hitting the back of her chair to get her to go and play with them, when that didn't work they grabbed her purse and started throwing it around all the while laughing and yelling to their mother to "come out and play." During this whole thing the children's mother was sitting there laughing at her "friends" wanting her to come and play with them. The children took it further by dumping her purse and taking all of the coins that fell out and using them in a vending machine nearby. When the children were finished with their mother’s purse they went and grabbed another patrons purse and commenced to run around with it. The woman that owned the purse ran over to the children and got her purse back and scolded their mother for not disciplining them. The woman could have easily called the police and made things rough for the kids and parents, but she did not.

The lack of control was disruptive for the patrons, the children thinking that their behavior was acceptable because the authoritative figure in their life was not imposing boundaries. The long term problems that could result from the lack of guidance and boundaries for the children could be life altering, with the children lacking respect with all figures of authority.

Young children who are allowed to continue with this type of behavior become adults who are even less pleasant to be with.
