Parenting Tips: Your Child Is An Individual

Every finger print and every snowflake is unique, every child is unique in their own very special way. Each child has their own special way of feeling, thinking, and interacting with other people.

Some children are reticent, while others are assured; some are animated, while others are serene; some are touchy, while others are easy-going. As a loving and supportive parent, it’s your role to help them to embrace their uniqueness and celebrate their individual qualities.

You must allow your daughter or son to express themselves through their interests. They may find a stimulating channel in theatre, dancing or painting, or they may show talent in the sciences or sports. Urge them to take part in what they like to do, what interests them, and what they enjoy. Help them understand that they don’t need to be uneasy about being ‘like everyone else.’

Teach your daughter or son to make constructive selections, and commend them for good acts, conduct and positive characteristics they are blessed with. Inspire them to an active participant in their neighborhood, and try activities that nurture a feeling of joining forces with others and fulfilment.

You want to be resolute yet fair when issuing chastisement for misdeamours or bad behavior, and make sure the rules and results for disobeying the rules are clearly spelt out. Demonstrate a supportive, caring and unified front with your partner when it comes to discipline.

Accept and salute your son or daughter’s uniqueness. Always remember that your daughter or son is an individual. Permit your child to have his or her own personal preferences and feelings, which may not be the same as own.

And finally, encourage your daughter or son to be true to themselves by doing the same. Demonstrate to your daughter or son how to make positive choices with the choices you make, and that nobody is without fault and you too make mistakes. Teach your daughter or son that mistakes can be a great learning episode, and that they should not be humiliated or mortified about making them.

Set a good example. Be the best role model you can be for your daughter or son.
