by Eddy Kong

Depression is a very misunderstood term on its own much less when combined into the condition of infertility depression.

The issue of depression is confounded by the fact there is a lot of erroneous discussion on the subject that exists on two ends of the clinical definition spectrum; either depression is under diagnosed or it is over diagnosed.

Under-diagnosing the problem is usually a way of masking or refusing to acknowledge there is a problem and over-diagnosing is a great way to help sell more anti-depressants.

Separating infertility and depression definitions are not easily

There are many root causes for depression. Many times depression is born out of a separate and unrelated disorder.

The sad irony to this is that they eventually interrelate and compound a problem. Infertility is also a condition that is misunderstood and has been misunderstood for centuries.

We can explore its several instances throughout the history that focuses to the multiple archaic causes which have since, almost, gone disappear.

Infertility and Depression – Two separate issues becoming into one major problem

Of course, Infertility is considered as a serious issue. There is not any surprise to know that the strain and stress surrounding the condition will carry out a serious short period of infertility depression. The negative mental state which a person can find within him can lead to a negative down turn in his mental state. The depression sometimes may pass but it often will not. A person must have to deal with the depression individually for effectively dealing with the issue of infertility depression because by doing so, one can address the proper treatment of infertility by having a clear enough of a mental state.

How to determine what is depression and what is not

Depression is not sadness, it is not a phase, and it is not “all in your head.” Depression is a state where nervous system function is “depressed” and an individual can not effectively function. Sometimes, the duration of the depression is lengthy enough and the level of the depression is high enough that it impedes major life activities. In this instance, it may impede a person’s ability to effectively seek treatment for infertility.

What are the treatments

One of the best methods to treat the infertility depression effectively is seeking professional’s assistance. Another method that can be considered is to seek outpatient, monitored medication treatment which is offered by one of your trusted psychiatrist.

When one gets able to under control the issue of depression it can assist to dimes the situation of infertility depression up to fifty percent.

by Isabel Tagge

* Question: How do you test for infertility?

Before taking any fertility tests, a doctor will give you an examination in order to rule out initial fertility problems. The doctor will generally begin by giving you a physical examination. He will also want to know your partner’s and your sexual and medical histories.

After completing the medical examinations, your fertility specialist will run a few tests. Generally, the semen specimen tests undergone by men evaluate his sperm based on the volume per ejaculation, movement (or motility) and shape. Some doctors will also give hormone and other tests.

For a woman, the fertility specialist will try to determine whether or not she is ovulating properly every month. In order to determine this, she will need to either take her temperature and record it every morning along with cervical mucous texture using a home kit for testing ovulation. To check whether or not ovulation is occurring, you may need to take some additional tests. These tests may include blood tests to determine hormone levels and an ultrasound for checking the ovaries.

* Question: What medicines are used to treat infertility in women?

The medication Clomiphene Citrate is often suggested for women who are experiencing problems with ovulation. It is also common for this drug to be used for women who may be experiencing Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or other disorders that inhibit ovulation.

hMG (human menopausal gonadotropin) is the drug commonly used by women who are not ovulating correctly due to complications with pituitary glands. hMG acts directly on the ovaries to stimulate|to help stimulate ovulation.

In addition to hMG, women experiencing infertility problems may be prescribed medications such as gonadotropin-releasing hormone (Gn-RH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). You will most likely receive these medications in the form of an injection.

Metformin is generally used to treat women with high levels of male hormones which interfere with ovulation. Metformin may be combined with FSH.

Another commonly prescribed medicine, Bromocriptine is prescribed for women who have problems ovulating caused by high levels of prolactin, the hormone responsible for lactation.

* Question: Will my insurance plan cover treatment of infertility?

Even though there are insurance plans that cover infertility treatments, such coverage is generally dependent on where you live and the type of insurance policy you have. Presently, there are 12 states that have enacted laws requiring insurance providers to cover some form of infertility diagnosis and treatments, either fully or partially. These states are:

- Arkansas

- California

- Connecticut

- Maryland

- Rhode Island

- Connecticut

- Massachusetts

- Montana

- New York

- Arkansas

- Arkansas

- Hawaii

Laws passed in each of these states may differ in their requirements as well as in the kinds of treatments that must be covered. If you would like additional information regarding insurance coverage for diagnosing and treating infertility, look up the website of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and click on the State Infertility Insurance Laws link.

The following extract is from a series of parenting articles and videos about in vitro fertilization …

Medical science is constantly looking for new procedures to help couples and women who are dealing with infertility. In vitro fertilization, while it has been around for a while now, has been able to help couples who have not been able to get pregnant. While the first IVF technique took place in Britain in 1978, the first successful in vitro fertilization procedure in the U.S. happened in 1981. Since that time, IVF has been responsible for the births of over 250,000 babies!

IVF is a technique where a man’s sperm is introduced to the woman’s egg in a laboratory dish where it is then fertilized, for about forty hours. After this time period the egg is checked to see if fertilization has indeed occurred. This IVF process is one method of infertility treatment and is also known as assisted reproduction. After the woman’s egg has been fertilized, the embryo is then placed into the womb and allowed to grow normally. When the implanting process takes place, between two and four embryos are typically transferred into the uterus or womb.

During the early years of in vitro fertilization and sometimes still today, the children born of this technique are referred to as “test tube babies.” The first test tube baby was born in England in 1978. IVF is normally suggested as a treatment when a woman has blocked tubes, severely damaged tubes or has no fallopian tubes at all. However, it can also be used when the individual trying to conceive has endometriosis or if the male involved has a low sperm count. There are also times that IVF is used when other fertility methods and fertility drugs have failed.

In vitro fertilization has made it possible for women, who once thought were incapable of conceiving a child, to become mothers of their naturally born children. Even women over the age of forty have a success rate of around 13% with IVF. It should be noted that reproductive health is not all that has to be taken into account when dealing with assisted fertilization. If the female faces other medical issues, this can raise a problem. A number of factors such as age, overall physical health and medical history should be taken into account before IVF or any other infertility procedure is practised.

natural fertility methods are being used to help women achieve a pregnancy and chart her menstrual cycle.

This is a system of observing and recording the female body symptoms and determining when sexual fertility is at it’s greatest. This is a simple system that can lead to increased chances of becoming pregnant and will help your doctor diagnose any difficulties that you may be having when you begin with this data.

After becoming familiar with natural fertility methods you’ll also be able to determine if you may be having infertility issues before waiting the requisite 12 months of unprotected sex without conception. The natural fertility methods are a simple system that point to the only highly fertile time during a woman’s monthly cycle. This time happens just before ovulation.

These natural fertility treatments works by observing the body as it moves through the menstrual cycle. There are several methods of determining fertility indicators which include basal body temperature, vaginal mucus, menstrual calendar and new urine testing for the LH surge.

One natural fertility method, the BBT, uses a basal body temperature thermometer, which is different from one used for a fever. A woman’s temperature is taken before getting out of bed in the morning to mark the slight increase in temperature that is experienced just at ovulation. The temperature is steady throughout the first half of the cycle and then rises just at ovulation. The progesterone release after ovulation causes the temperature to rise by about ½ of a degree Fahrenheit. This confirms that an egg has been released but doesn’t predict ovulation.

Oftentimes a chart comes with the thermometer so women can chart their temperature and use the information to interpret their cervical mucus. It is helpful to make several copies of the chart to continue using it for several months.

A woman’s cervical mucus will change during the menstrual cycle and becoming aware of these changes will help to improve your chances of determining your most fertile times. You would think of the cervical mucus as either resisting or allowing sperm to penetrate the cervix. When the mucus is wet and slippery it is much easier for the sperm to get through than when it is drier and thick.

Each woman has different mucus characteristics so it is important to get to know your own body. Interestingly there is also a particular odor or smell to the mucus at different times of the month as well.

You’ll only need to know the mucus that is at the vaginal mouth. This can be observed when you are going to the bathroom and wipe after urinating. It doesn’t require observing at a specific time of the day or just in the morning. It is helpful to remember to observe each time you are in the bathroom so it becomes habit. When the mucus changes from dry and thick to wet and slippery it indicates you are becoming fertile.

Chart all these observations with your temperature changes. If you find that you don’t have a rise in temperature during several months and/or the cervical mucus isn’t changing you will want to make an appointment with a reproductive endocrinologist. You may be having difficulty with ovulation.

Your basal body temperature will also predict when your period will start. From the first day of menstruation until ovulation the time can vary but once ovulation has happened the time varies by only one or two days. Following these natural fertility methods and if you’re temperature stays elevated for over 18 days, good news…you are pregnant!

Most folks don’t think of acupuncture when thinking about infertility but after such a long time of this type of therapy have made it clear that this is a therapy worth looking at.

You’ll need to find a local acupuncturist but since this therapy is growing so quickly you are likely to find one quite easily. You should be careful when choosing an acupuncturist and find one that really does have good experience and isn’t a new ‘kid on the block’ because unless someone is just a ‘natural’ it’s going to take them some time to get skilled.

Whether you are just wanting to see an acupuncturist for fertility or maybe for a health problem or you are thinking of getting into acupuncture yourself you’ll find useful posts on my newest website. One of my latest posts is on acupuncture schools and there are also recent posts about other health stuff such as using fish oils for supplementation.

See you on the site.

It’s an age old question… are fertility issues related to age? Infertility statistics suggest younger women face less complications in both getting pregnant and experiencing problems during a pregnancy.

Let’s look at some of the pros and cons relating to a woman’s age and why this might have a bearing on improving her prospects of a risk free conception and pregnancy.

Does Age Make A Difference?

So what’s the difference between getting pregnant at age twenty as opposed to age forty? Infertility statistics suggest women in their twenties not only face less complication issues but their bodies are more conditioned to to bearing children.

For example, a woman in her 20’s is likely to have more predictable ovulation cycles while her eggs will be in optimum supply. Being pregnant means having to carry an extra load which can put plenty of pressure on a woman’s body.

Younger women will in most cases be at their prime physical condition meaning their bodies will be more attuned to dealing with the extra burden placed on areas such as their back and bone structure.

So does this mean women should only consider having children in their twenties. No, of course not. In fact, while conditions are more favorable, the question needs to be asked… is a woman in her twenties actually ready to have a baby before the age of 30?

Today’s Trends

The truth is, times have changed; more and more women are having their first babies in their thirties and even forties. Career choices mean having children is put on hold. But does this compromise their chances of being able to conceive at a later age?

Infertility statistics show a woman will have around half a million eggs and the simple fact is as she gets older, so do her eggs. Which means what? Simply put, at a young age, she is likely to conceive a lot quicker than a woman into her thirties and forties.

If you are into your thirties and having difficulty conceiving it’s natural to think there may be a fertility issue. In most cases, it’s just that conception will take more time. It’s also worth pointing out the mid thirties usually signals the high risk pregnancy stage for a woman.

This article is only meant to highlight some infertility statistics for you to consider however, any of the issues mentioned above should be discussed with your doctor, especially if you are in your thirties and considering having children.
